History
PIC New Zealand was formed in 1987, and since then has grown to be the largest pig breeding
company in New Zealand. In May 2007, a consortium comprising PIC Australia, George Smith (a
Waikato based pig, dairy and dry stock farmer) and Rakino Partners Limited (an investment
banking firm) purchased PIC.
This change in ownership to experienced industry players is a very
positive outcome for the staff, customers and suppliers of PIC. The new owners provide a unique
mix of backgrounds and skills to draw upon. They are excited about the future of PIC and have a
strong desire to continue to develop and grow PIC’s genetic business for the benefit of its
customers, suppliers and the NZ Pork Industry.
At PIC, we know that our success depends on the success of our customers. We work to
understand and anticipate their needs and treat them as partners in developing our business. We
collaborate with our customers to meet future industry demands-striving always to deliver the
highest quality genetics and services that ultimately satisfy pork consumers.
Internationally, PIC has been delivering this genetic improvement since 1963, during which time it
has expanded into 30 countries across all five continents in the world.
As a result of its size and global presence, PIC can:
- Utilise the experience it has gained to maximise the benefits to our customers and help them
achieve their potential.
- Supply the breeding stock requirements of all pig producers throughout New Zealand.
- Offer different genetic lines to suit local market production systems, meat preference and
climatic conditions.
- Afford to participate and invest significantly more than its competitors in research and
development to further enhance genetic lines and reinforce its competitive advantage.
